HUGH W. CONNELLY
Hugh W. Connelly received his bachelor’s in finance from Temple University, and a Master of Science in Bank Management and Investing from Drexel University. He is currently the Executive Vice President of Business Banking at Huntingdon Valley Bank. In his prior position as Market President for Univest Bank and Trust Co., he led Business Banking, Cash Management and SBA Lending. Hugh was also the President of Univest Capital, Inc. a nationwide equipment finance company. In 2015 he led the development of a small business banking subscription product, which was recognized by Bank Director magazine as one of the year’s top 5 Fin Tech innovations.
Hugh was trained as a corporate banker in the CoreStates Bank Management Training Program. He moved through the corporate bank assuming roles of additional responsibility including developing the West Coast market and lending in Europe. He next moved into the investment bank where he helped issuers securitize over $1.2 billion in small business loans/leases. Leaving corporate America in 1999, he became a serial entrepreneur founding three specialty finance companies, VerticaLease.com, FirstLease, Inc. and Vanguard Leasing, Inc. which was acquired by Univest and re-branded Univest Capital, Inc.
Hugh combines his love of learning with his desire to share his knowledge with others. Through the Financial Services Volunteer Corps., he advised an Angolan Bank on developing its small business strategy and a Mongolian bank on its use of technology to streamline the lending process. In 2018, he travelled to Tunis, Tunisia to help several banks develop credit scoring models. He is the instructor for the SBA’s Emerging Leaders Program in Philadelphia where he teaches small business owners how to organize and scale their companies. He is an adjunct faculty member at Drexel University’s Close School of Entrepreneurship.
Mr. Connelly earned the professional certifications of the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and Certified Treasury Professional (CTP). He earned the Microfinance Certification jointly issued by the London based Microfinance Association and The University of Rome.
